Dubai Recognizes Payment of Salaries in Cryptocurrency

The Dubai Court of First Instance has ruled that paying salaries in cryptocurrency is valid in employment contracts. This decision marks a shift from a similar ruling in 2023, where the court rejected such a claim due to the lack of precise cryptocurrency valuation. Irina Heaver, a partner at NeosLegal in the UAE, sees this ruling as a sign of the progressive integration of cryptocurrencies into the country’s legal and economic framework. Recently, an employee complained about unpaid wages, including part set in EcoWatt tokens. The court ruled in favor of the employee and ordered the payment of the cryptocurrency salary per the contract without converting it to fiat currency. Heaver believes this decision is a significant step in the UAE’s path toward leading the digital economy and could help create a more innovative business environment.
